NSCoPSE welcomes move to make PSHE a statutory subject
NSCoPSE
- The National Association for Personal and Social Education Advisors,
Inspectors and Consultants has welcomed today's move by Schools Minister,
Jim Knight, to make Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) a statutory
subject in the National Curriculum for English schools.
Commenting after today's announcement, Marilyn Tew, Chair
of NSCoPSE, said:- 'We welcome the new status of PSHE as an essential
and integral part of each school's work in developing successful learners,
confident individuals and responsible citizens.
'We anticipate the move will:
- foster more training and support to improve the quality
of PSHE teaching;
- encourage school leaders to allocate time and resources
for PSHE when planning the
curriculum;
- raise the status of PSHE in Initial Teacher Training;
-
improve the opportunities and life chances for young people.
'Our
members have been closely involved in the reviews of Sex and Relationships
Education and Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco Education, whose recommendations
are announced today, and we look forward to making important contributions
to the forthcoming consultation on the introduction of PSHE as a new subject.’
Notes
to Editors
NSCoPSE-
The National PSE Association is the professional organisation for local
authority advisers, inspectors and consultants with responsibility for
all aspects of personal and social education, including health education
and citizenship, in schools and other educational settings. NSCoPSE believes
that all pupils are entitled to opportunities for personal and social
development, not only through high quality PSHE programmes, but through
the curriculum as a whole.
NSCoPSE was formed in 1989 to exert professional pressure
to ensure that the new National Curriculum, introduced in 1990, did not
neglect this important aspect of education. It made a major contribution
to the development of the new frameworks for PSHE published in National
Curriculum 2000, and proposed the development of a national strategy for
continuing professional development (CPD) to support the implementation
of PSHE & citizenship, launched by Minister Jacqui Smith at NSCoPSE’s
annual conference. As the voice of local authority advisers, it is involved
in all major initiatives in the PSHE/personal development field.
